Operation iPhone 3G

Sunday, July 20th, 2008

Wanting an iPhone 3G these first days, that’s part 1. Part 2 though is much more important now: how do I get my hands on one.

I could wait in line and be lucky to catch one, but the war is over here in The Neterlands for more than 60 years now and I really don’t like soup kitchen lines. Not for food and for sure not for something else than food.

Next to that I refuse to sign a 2-year contract with a gsm operator. In The Netherlands this is T-Mobile, here known for its poor in-house reception, due to the used frequency. The iPhones you get are also simlocked, something I also don’t like for something that is mine.

I made my hands dirty and drove to our friendly southern neighbours in Belgium. Brussels to be more precise. Two hours to go and two hours back.

In Belgium a simlock is illegal and so gsm operator Mobistar has to sell the phone to anyone, with or without a 2-year contract. It wasn’t easy to get one and I will not get into details (unless you really ask me), but I got my iPhone 3G. It has a big and when I say big, I mean BIG WOW factor.

Am I a fanboy? Yes and No.

I was getting sick and tired to walk around with and a Nokia E61i (connections) and Palm Centro (calender (Datebk6!) and contacts infomation). I have everything in a bigger, but ONE device. Finally…

But do I like Apple and the operators to grap me by the b*lls/n*ts? I don’t think so!

Terminate a pregnancy

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

This term is right out of the dictionary. It is said being an euphemism for abortion and it is a very difficult subject with numerous angles (religious, health, etc.) and very difficult to think, talk and write about….

I would rather write about gps and other nice toys, but I have been watching Belgian television this morning. This is easy, as we share the same language Dutch / Flemish.

There was a coverage about French women who are going to The Netherlands to have a termination of their pregnancy. Again on their way to The Netherlands, just like drug couriers.

Does this say something about MY country or, in this case, the stupidity of France?!

Is The Netherlands a country without laws and with stupid ideas on drugs, abortion, and so many other subjects? I don’t think so.

In The Netherlands we have quite liberal (as in: liberty) ideas about things. It doesn’t mean that there are no discussions about these important issues.

Abortion is not always the solution, but to condemn, and even sabotage (yes, with filmed and recorded proof!) the intensions of women who have probably a reason not to have a baby.

So women still have nog right to make their own descision, within medical ethics and the law, even in France!

Vive La France!

Travelling Netherlands is nice

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

I have been away from home last weekend. I am a bit tired and wanted to take a little hike with my brother, just to relax. Finally we took the bikes out and went on the way. Wireless…
We took a Nokia E61, a Palm Treo 680, a standard gsm, a Magellan SporTrak Color (handheld) GPS and a QStarZ Bluetooth GPS ‘mouse’.

You wonder why we took all this ? We wanted to go out and play a worldwide high tech game: Geocaching (dutch: here).

People always want to travel to the other side of the world to see how life is overthere… And there is nothing wrong with that. I mean this is great. It grows more understanding for others I think…
The problem is that people (including me) don’t know what there is to see within say 50 km from there own home. That is a pity…

Don’t you agree? Tell me… With pictures if you can!
